Fawn Mountain Procedures

1.     School Hours: School starts at 9:00(10:00 for Kindergartners) and ends at 3:20. Preschool starts at 9:00 and ends at 1:00. Adult supervision exists outside from 8:35 until 9:00 a.m.  There is no supervision after school.

2.      Closed Campus: We have a closed campus between 8:45 a.m. and 3:10 p.m.  After arriving, students may not leave without parental permission.  All visitors must check in at the office.  Please understand that we may only release a child to a parent or guardian.  We may require identification to release a child during school hours.

3.     Dress Code: Our dress code is very general. Clothing must be reasonably modest and suitable for the day’s activities. (Dresses are not good on P.E. days, bad weather clothing is important on all days.) We do not allow tank tops or clothing that promotes the use of drugs, including alcohol or tobacco products.

4.     Pets: No pet or other animal is allowed at school without specific permission from the principal.  When pets follow students to school an effort is made to contact the parent who is expected to retrieve the pet.  If contact cannot be made, or if the parent cannot pick up the animal, the local animal control office is called and asked to pick up the animal.

5.    Address/phone number changes: It is very important that you contact the school office as soon as you make a change in your address, home phone, work  phone, or your emergency contact.  Such information is necessary if the school needs to contact the parent or guardian in case of an emergency or in routine clerical work.

6.    Parent newsletter: A parent newsletter from the Fawn Mountain School office will be sent home most       Fridays.  Please encourage your child to get this communication to you or check their backpacks.

7.    Birthday Invitations:  Please do not send birthday invitations to pass out at  school unless you are sending enough invitations for each child in the class.

HEALTH SERVICES

Please be sure to call 228-2200 before 9:30 a.m. to excuse your child from school if he/she is ill or won’t be in school for any reason.

1.           ILLNESS

   A.   If a student becomes ill during the school day, he/she will be sent to  the  office for the health clerk or secretary to determine what action should be taken.  We don’t have a place for sick children to lie down except in the school office.  If your child seems too ill to participate in class, you will be called to come take the child home.

   B.    If students are somewhat ill in the morning, please do not send them to school hoping they will get better.  Keep them home and if they get better, bring them to school later.  Often we have students who are sick by 9:00   only to find out that they weren’t feeling well before they came to school.  This can be an inconvenience for you, us, and especially your child.

   C.    If students are too sick to go outside, they are too sick to be in school.  Please do not send notes requesting your child stay indoors during recess.  There is no indoor supervision during recess times and students need the fresh air after hours spent in the classroom.  Exceptions may be made with a note from your physician or in extreme cases.

2.           MEDICATION

     A.    If it is necessary for your child to take prescription medication during the school day, you must have a school district medical form (available in the  school office or from your physician) filled out and signed by your doctor.

     B.  Because we do not have a school nurse, we are not allowed to give over the counter medication (aspirin, throat lozenges, etc.) unless you fill out, sign and return the school district medical form along with the medication.

HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS AT FAWN MOUNTAIN

At Fawn Mountain we are careful not to teach any particular religion.  However, many holidays are cultural events with religious foundations.  We do teach about and participate in those cultural events.  As we approach such holidays we:

            1.    Approach each from a cultural perspective and include as many cultures as possible.

            2.    Attempt to be as sensitive as possible to individual  children of all religions as well as     those who profess no religion.

While we are a secular institution by law, we honor and respect the diverse cultures that are reflected by the families that make up Fawn Mountain School.  We believe that part of understanding the wonderfully rich cultures that are represented at our school is understanding the religious foundations of those cultures.  Through understanding comes tolerance, and we teach tolerance at Fawn Mountain.

SPECIALIZED LEARNING AT FAWN MOUNTAIN

Specialized learning is available at Fawn Mountain for students who may have learning difficulties or speech, language, and hearing needs.

We have a classroom designed for preschool age children with special needs.  These children are eligible to begin their education at three years of age when their development is delayed in the areas of gross motor, fine motor, speech, or language skills.

Resource teachers, basic skills teachers, an Indian Education tutor, a bilingual teacher, a Reading Specialist, Occupational and Physical Therapists and Speech and Language  Therapists provide supplementary programs for students with a variety of needs.

We regard our special needs programs as one of our strengths.  Students here learn about individual differences.  They also learn about love, patience, and acceptance.  Our school population provides models for children with developmental delays and help typical children learn about differences in the ways people grow.

DISCIPLINE

So often, when adults discuss discipline they are referring to systems that dispense punishment to children.  Our School District has a Discipline Policy and regulations that prescribe consequences for inappropriate actions.  We also have some of our own rules and regulations, but those systems are not the only important parts of discipline at Fawn Mountain.

There are four keys to positive discipline at Fawn Mountain School.

              1.           Caring staff who model mutual respect.

              2.           Clear expectations.

              3.           Established routines.

              4.           Involved parents.

These four keys work together to build a culture that promotes student comfort and encourages positive cooperation.

Discipline practices at Fawn Mountain are designed to promote the business of learning and foster citizenship.  At our school, discipline allows us to work together with mutual respect, to maintain an atmosphere in which each of us may realize a successful educational experience.

The staff at Fawn Mounain encourages the mutual respect that our discipline policies imply by respecting student’s rights and individual differences.  We try hard to model the consideration for others that we expect from our students.

            SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION

Laidlaw Transit Inc. is our bus company.  Please call them at 225-3806 for schedule and routing information or if you have any busing concerns or questions.  Laidlaw will also be able to provide you with their consequences for negative behavior and their expectations of your children while they are on the bus.  If your preschool student will be riding the bus their teacher may be able to help with drop off and pick up times.

DRUG FREE SCHOOL

Fawn Mountain Elementary School is a drug free school.  At Fawn Mountain a healthy, drug free lifestyle is encouraged.  Sale, use, or possession of any drug including alcohol, tobacco, or inhalants is strictly prohibited.  Any student violating this prohibition is subject to disciplinary action which always involves parental contact and may involve suspension from school and/or involvement by police.  By action of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School Board, use of any drug including alcohol and tobacco on any campus by adults is likewise prohibited.

A BASIC EDUCATION AT FAWN MOUNTAIN

Often schools try to be all things to all people.  Reading skills, literature appreciation, writing, spelling, foreign language study, computer science, natural science, environmental education, career education, math, critical thinking, geography, social studies, music, art, physical education, drug education, sex education, fire prevention education, health education, and more all find their way into elementary education curriculums.  It is little wonder that teachers complain about too little time and too much to cover.

We at Fawn Mountain do not attempt to be all things to all people.  We regard a basic education as:

              1.           Developing strong communication skills, including reading and writing literacy, and listening and speaking skills.

              2.           Developing logical thinking, including mathematics.

              3.           Developing research skills, including the abilities to find, organize, and use information.

              4.           Developing a basic understanding of scientific investigation and of the natural environment.

              5.           Developing social awareness including the ability to interact successfully  with others.

We expect graduates of Fawn Mountain to display competencies in these five areas.

Of course we do more.  We have outstanding computer education.  We have wonderful physical education and music programs.  Each teacher uses a variety of enrichment programs.  But, our focus is always on the basic five competencies, and our curricular units in some way aim at developing those competencies.

ACCOUNTABILITY AT FAWN MOUNTAIN SCHOOL

There are as many expectations for Fawn Mountain as there are students who attend.  Attempts to measure and quantify this family school’s effectiveness are at best limited representations of what Fawn Mountain students learn.  Understanding the limits of accountability, we use the following:

              1.    Parent Input Form.  Parent may fill these out if desired.

              2.    Parent Involvement.  We believe that parent volunteerism, membership in PTA, and attendance at                      parent teacher conferences are signs of school health.

             3.     Parent Teacher Conferences.  The most important accountability standards that Fawn Mountain                        students and teachers are held to are   those individual standards and expectations which parents                     and teachers discuss frankly during parent teacher conferences.

              4.    Classroom Achievement Measurement.  Each classroom teacher uses a variety of developmental                      rubrics and achievement tests to determine whether or not children are meeting expectations.  Some                      rubrics and tests are used uniformly enough to allow for collection of school-wide data.

              5.    Norm Reference Testing.  Tera Nova, Gates, State Standards Based Assessment Test, Scholastic                      Reading Inventory and Star Reading test.
